Smash Champs is a 2D fighting game where instead of directly controlling your characters, you train fighters so they can defeat their opponents in battle without you pulling the strings.
In the beginning, you can choose from one of six available fighters: a leopard, a gorilla, a hyena, a bear, a crocodile, and other humanoid characters. Each one has special abilities and strengths, so choose carefully.
In Smash Champs, the mechanic used in training your fighter strongly resembles that of Fruit Ninja. You, as the trainer, have to hit balls so your soon-to-be champion can return them. You'll also have to keep an eye out for explosive balls (as in Fruit Ninja).
Once you're done with training, it's time to fight. During these 2D matches, you can only watch as your fighter shows his stuff. This can get a little boring, although luckily the excellent graphics help make up for it.
Smash Champs is an entertaining game from the same developers that made Subway Surfers. While it retains the visual style of that game, it's different in every other way. The only setback is that just watching the characters fight makes you want to actually control them, and you can't.
